Gender affirmation is a core piece of supporting and caring for trans youth and students. For many trans youth, school is a safe haven away from unsupportive or abusive homes. It is a place where they can find support and legislation that seeks to dismantle or limit supports for trans young people, like giving them the basic decency of being called what they ask to be called, places added stress on these vulnerable young people. I speak from experience, as a former trans youth and current trans adult. I came out while I was still in high school. My family gave me mixed support and so I fought my school mostly on my own. No matter how hard I pushed or how much effort I gave in trying to convince my school to respect what I wanted to be called, my requests fell on uncaring ears. I was told I needed to legally change my name and gender for them to adhere to my wishes and given that I was a high school student, I lacked the legal independence and financial means to make that happen. In response, I avoided going to school. Instead of being able to be respected while receiving an education, I chose to risk my ability to graduate because my school's attitude towards my name emboldened my classmates in bullying, demeaning, and mocking my identity. They clearly felt that if my school had the power to not call me what I wanted to be called, they didn't have to either. Legislation like HP 447 tell trans students that we don't respect them. It tells them that if they want to be respected, they better have been lucky enough to be born into a family who supports them and who can fight along side them. Otherwise they are on their own until they legally change their documentation.
