I am writing to encourage you to vote no for house bill 206. I am a resident of Bozeman and have 3 children, 2 still present in the public school system. I am troubled by the 1 thing in particular in this bill that being that a mill levy will not pass without a 50% turnout. Why do we need a 50% turnout when voter turnout has been low? The last general elections in Montana had a 39% turnout. I would encourage all seated members to look at the percentage of voter turnout for their counties. What possible benefit could this bring to our communities and public schools that are always under funded. Turnout in most elections is never as high as we would like in a democratic state. This would further discourage voting as people could stay home and encourage their neighbors to do the same if they were not in favor of voting for the levy. This is not how our democracy was set up to function. I see this is a partisan bill and feel like a way to weaken public schools by trying to stop needed funding. Thank you for your time and serving our communities in Montana.
